In this video, I explain why my time in federal prison was easier than it is for many others. The reason is simple: I did it. I broke the law. There was no internal struggle, no questioning whether I should have fought the case, and no resentment over my plea deal. Accepting responsibility made the experience clear.
I’ve worked with many people who don’t have that same clarity. Some feel they pled guilty to something they didn’t actually do, or they believe the government overstated their role. That internal conflict makes prison harder. Instead of focusing on their adjustment and release plan, they dwell on the past, replaying the “what-ifs” in their minds.
Beyond the mental toll, there’s a real consequence—longer prison sentences. The government rewards people who fully accept responsibility. If prosecutors or judges sense hesitation, they see it as a lack of remorse, which can mean fewer sentencing reductions and less leniency.
