Federal Prison Release: 15 Years Later
In my latest YouTube video, I reflected on my 15-year journey since being released from federal prison. It’s hard to believe how quickly time has passed, but looking back, it’s clear that I learned some crucial lessons along the way.
One of my biggest regrets was not thoroughly enjoying the day of my release.
I was so focused on what came next that I didn’t take a moment to savor that first taste of freedom. Have you ever been so caught up in planning for the future that you forgot to appreciate the present? I know I have. But I’ve also done many things right since then.
I wasn’t afraid to try new things, even if it meant failing a few times. I cultivated relationships that have been invaluable, both personally and professionally. And, of course, I continued to accept responsibility for my past, recognizing that life after prison is different—whether we like it or not. It requires thinking in five- and ten-year plans and a commitment to working your way back, step by step.
One of the more interesting realizations I’ve had over the last 15 years is how, despite knowing what to do—like holding lawyers accountable, demonstrating to stakeholders that you’re worthy of leniency, and taking active steps to mitigate—many people still won’t do it. It’s like knowing you should eat healthy or avoid excessive drinking, but not always following through. I’m guilty of that myself at times. Why do you think that is?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned, however, is that while some people don’t take the necessary steps to prepare, many do.
And those who do usually find that their efforts pay off in the long run. The last 15 years have been full of ups and downs, but I’ve remained grateful for this community and the incredible support I’ve received.
Thank you,
