I was on a phone call with a federal defendant and his wife. Twice during the call, I said something that made her say, you got that right. The second time came after I asked her an uncomfortable question.
Not Every Case Starts the Same Way
Most people who come into our community went into business with good intentions. Things happen. Before they know it, they are in trouble.
This defendant was not one of them. That leaves a small group of people who go into business to steal and do harm, and by his own admission, that was him. He took shortcuts. He said one thing and immediately did another. He stole. He deceived.
She Had No Idea
It is easy to blame spouses. They love the life, the country club, the lifestyle. Much of the time, especially in this case, they had no idea. She was deceived like a victim.
On the call, she could not believe this was happening. She said, I just want to go back to how it was.
I said, that life is over. This is who he is, through his own admission.
The Question That Got the Second "You Got That Right"
She made a comment, and I asked her something back. I said, would you want that life that's built on the backs of the people your husband stole from?
There was a pause. Five, maybe ten seconds.
Then she said, yeah, you got that right, too.
