Embracing the Tortoise: Learning Patience and Persistence in Federal Prison

Life in federal prison, I know, can feel like an endless race, but there’s a timeless lesson to be learned from an unexpected source—the well-known fable of the Tortoise and the Hare.

Remember the story? The bold and speedy hare was so sure of his victory that he became complacent, while the slow and steady tortoise won the race. This fable isn’t just a children’s tale; it’s a profound analogy for life in federal prison.

Time can feel like racing or standing still in prison, and the experience can be overwhelming. As we covered in our recent webinar, it’s a world where the usual rules don’t apply, and it’s easy to feel lost and directionless.

Slow and Steady Wins The Race In Federal Prison

That’s where the lesson of the tortoise comes in. While serving my 18-month sentence in federal prison, Michael helped me discover that the key to thriving was the daily pursuit of deliberate tasks. Slow and steady, just like the tortoise!

You can’t rush through a prison sentence; trying to do so will only lead to frustration and failure. Instead, you need to find a routine, set realistic goals, and pursue them steadily daily. By starting, you gain traction and you learn when to pivot.

Building a Foundation In Federal Prison

This might mean spending time daily on your release plan, building a new business, or focusing on personal growth and rehabilitation. It’s not about trying to run a marathon in one hour; it’s about laying one brick at a time, building a foundation that can support you both during your time inside and once you’re out. I cannot say it enough: slow and steady wins the race!

I found that those who succeeded in prison weren’t the ones who were always racing around, trying to do everything at once. They were the ones who took their time, planned their days, and made consistent, deliberate progress. And they documented and memorialized their progress.

Humble Progress in Federal Prison

There’s a humility to this approach, a recognition that we don’t have all the answers and that real change takes time and effort. It’s about accepting where you are, recognizing where you want to be, and taking the small, steady steps needed.
